HDMI not so hot?

So I bought a 42 inch Samsung HDTV DLP and then went to purchase a Phillips DVD player that upscales my DVD to 720p (which is the native resolution of my tv). I also bought an HDMI cable to connect the DVD player to my TV. At first I thought the picture quality on my DVD was very good, but now it looks kind of shit. In widescreen, the picture quality is kind of block and wash (worse for full-screen, of course). Is this normal DVD playback on a TV, even with an HDMI connection and a DVD player that upscales? I thought the HDMI cable in conjunction with a player DVD upscaling is assumed that the image quality pretty? WTF?

and I hate to you, but thats the TV causing the slow response has Samsung 720P DLP so you see every pixel on the move much when the photo is supposed to be more clear + also is collecting all the garbage from the DVD from being updated just stick to 480p the picture is still great and no pixelation
